  •    PLI Fellows

PPSGC will hold its next state PLI in Columbiana County this fall.  This will be our first rural PLI in Ohio!  Our PLI graduates in Columbus and Cleveland are busy implementing their projects in the northern part of the state.  Kim Castaneda’s “Tuesday Read II” project is really taking off.  She is collaborating with community partners to extend her resources for the program.  The goal of the program is to increase parent participation and reading scores by six percent on the Ohio Achievement Test (OAT) for 6th graders at Eastgate School by June 2010.

  •   GEARUP

A big thank you to all of the parents that came out for the GEARUP kickoff cookouts!  Families of the 5th, 6th & 7th grade students from all 31 GEARUP schools were invited to one of our five cookouts.  Thanks also to AWL, Mt. Airy, Pleasant Ridge, Roberts and Douglass Schools for hosting the events.

Families enjoyed a great JTM cookout while meeting their GEARUP staff members and learning about how we will help guide their students step-by-step to college.  Congratulations to our door prize winning families who enjoyed $60 Kroger gift cards and other prizes donated by the Cincinnati Museum Center, Newport Aquarium, Larosa’s and Scallywag Tag.

Many wonderful volunteers signed up to be GEARUP parent champions at the cookouts, but we still need more!  Our GEARUP parent champions will work to spread the word about GEARUP events and activities to other parents in their student’s grade.  Parent champions will work with the GEARUP Parent Involvement Specialist, Kathleen Bates to address the needs and concerns of GEARUP parents and generate ideas and activities to get every parent more involved with their child’s education.

If you would like to become a GEARUP parent champion call Kathleen at 751-5437.  The time commitment is up to you and we will have a variety of volunteer activites to choose from.

Be on the lookout for information about GEARUP's week long summer day camps coming this July.  Each week will feature a different theme and students can attend as many camps as they wold like.  All GEARUP students are eligible and the cost is -FREE!.

Questions or comments – call Kathleen 751-5437.

Thank you for supporting your child’s education
